Everything you need to know about athletics betting
Every athlete, no matter how big, has already done athletics – certainly at school and also in their free time. Athletics is a collective term for the sporting disciplines that have to do with running, jumping or throwing . A combination of all of the aforementioned disciplines is evident in the all- around . Athletics should be differentiated from heavy athletics, where it is all about lifting or throwing heavy weights. Athletics is an individual sport, it only becomes team sport in the relay race. Long distance running is becoming increasingly popular in popular sports. The numerous national races and marathons have been enjoying the steadily growing number of participants and spectators for years. In duathlon and triathlon, a running discipline is also part of the competition.
“Citius, altius, fortius” – “faster, higher, stronger” or “further” as it is often used – Olympia is the greatest goal of every athlete and whoever has made it to the Olympic champion is generally considered a hero. Without athletics, the Olympics would probably never have become what they are today. Athletics was the core of the first Olympic Games and today, too, athletics is at the heart, even though countless other sports have also become Olympic.
Almost every sport in the world has its origins over the centuries, with first-time mentions, names of inventors and established regulations. This looks a little different in terms of athletics. England is considered to be the origin of athletics , where competitions were held at the beginning of the 19th century and the two universities of Oxford and Cambridge repeatedly dueled. Basically, such disciplines were practiced in a similar form in ancient Greece, but the forerunners of today’s athletics are more in England.
Disciplines of athletics
In general, a distinction is made between running, jumping and throwing disciplines . 24 athletic disciplines are held at the Olympic Games .
|Disciplines of athletics|
|RUN:||Sprint: 100m, 200m, 400m|
relay: 4x100m, 4x 400m
hurdles: 100 or 110m, 400m
medium distance: 800m, 1500m
long distance: 5000m, 10.000m
marathon: 42.195 km
walking: 20 km, 50 km
|LEAP:||High jump, pole jump, long jump, triple jump|
|THROW:||Shot put, discus throw, hammer throw, javelin throw|

Depending on the discipline, the runs are held on athletics tracks or on the street. For track competitions, the route length is given in meters, for road competitions in kilometers.
The steeplechase takes place in the stadium, with four obstacles (= hurdles) and at the end a moat to be overcome.
The following disciplines are combined in the all-around:
- Decathlon of men: 100m sprint, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m sprint, 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, spear, 1500m run
- Women’s heptathlon (heptathlon): 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m sprint, long jump, spear, 800m run
The umbrella organization of athletics is the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations).
Explanation of the rules
No sport can do without rules that on the one hand contribute to the safety of the athletes and on the other hand should guarantee fairness in the competitions. The rules of all athletics disciplines are laid down in the International Competition Rules (IWR).
Basically, every competition discipline is about being the fastest, tallest or furthest of all participants. In the running competitions, the running routes – or in the stadium your own track – must not be left, no competitors may be hindered and a command is started.
In the jumping competitions, a certain marking for the jump must be observed (long jump), a certain technique must be jumped (triple jump) or a crossbar must be skipped without it falling (pole vault and high jump). In the throwing disciplines, a certain line may also not be crossed or a certain drop point may not be left until the throwing device has landed.
In the event of violations, the attempts will be considered invalid or a disqualification will be given. Otherwise, the athletes are relatively free in the way they reach their goals (eg high jump). In every discipline, it is always important to get the best out of your own body and thus achieve the best possible performance.
Types of bets in athletics
The typical competition season in athletics is the summer half-year. In winter, the time of preparation is where cross-country skiing or running takes place in the hall. Athletics events are few and far between, which makes it all the more enjoyable when competitions are coming up and the athletes can put their skills to the test. Since these competitions are usually international, there are also suitable bets for every discipline. Sometimes the range offered is somewhat larger (the bigger and more well-known the event) and sometimes unfortunately there are very few bets. Basically, the following bets are possible:
|Types of bets in athletics|
|winner||In athletics, it is always about the winner. For this purpose, bets on the individual winner are available in every discipline. Athletics is so special that there are clear favorites in most competitions.|
|Head to head||The head-to-head offers are very interesting and above all an alternative to the often low odds for favorite bets. Here, the betting offer and odds are attractive, because it is about betting on a duel between two selected participants. So you can also tap on athletes who are more likely to be found in the back field.|
|Number of points||In athletics, bets on the number of points can only be made in disciplines in which points are awarded and this is only the case in all-around competitions. In this case, you can tap on the expected number of points for individual athletes.|
|Record bet||Record bets are always something special, because it is the events that are automatically connected to them. Even if, in certain times, new records were set almost in an inflationary manner, this rarely happens today, probably because the subject of doping is now better monitored. With record bets, you simply bet whether there is a new record (European, world record or similar) in a discipline or not.|
Tips and Tricks
The area of betting on athletics is really not easy, as the athletes are lone fighters and everyone has their sometimes fluctuating performances. So it is all the more difficult to always keep an eye on the current performance characteristics of all athletes and to be up to date. But this is extremely important, because it is precisely this that matters. A slightly weaker performance, for example, cannot be compensated and compensated for by a team. Every performance leads to a direct result. Therefore, you should be extremely well informed if you are interested in betting on athletics and thus also about current problems and injuries or simply be informed of performance lows. This means a lot of work and is therefore rather something for die-hard fans or experts in this area.
