## What is a Flag bet

A bet on 4 selections that make 23 separate bets. Broken down it’s a bet with 6 doubles, 4 trebles, a fourfold and 6 up-and-down single stakes about (SSA) pairs. Each SSA bet is in itself 2 separate bets which brings the total number to 23 bets. Please see our SSA calculator page for more details. A Flag bet can be considered to be a Yankee bet with 6 SSA bets added.

## Flag calculations

As the flag is a bet type made up of 2 more popular bets, a Yankee bet and 6 SSA bets we will let you check our pages that derive the formulas for these two separate bets. Here we will just give you the two formulas and show you how to add them together to calculate a flag bet.

Although we say it’s always good to know how a bet type you’re punting on works we do recommend that with many of the more complicated bets you just use our betting calculators to work out your winnings, as this will reduce the risk of miscalculations.

The formula for a Yankee bet is

((A + 1)(B + 1)(C + 1)(D + 1) – (A + B + C + D + 1))*Stake = winnings

Where A, B, C and D are your four separate betting selections.

The formula for an SSA bet is broken up into 2 separate parts, one for both selections in the bet winning and one for when only one of the selections win.

((Stake x selection 1) – Stake) + (Stake x selection 2) + ((Stake x Selection 2) – Stake) + (Stake x selection 1)

And

(Stake x Winning selection) – (2 x Stake)

As the overall formula will change depending on which of the 4 selections win it is best to see how these 3 different calculations combine in the examples section below. The SSA calculations will be used 6 times combining AB, AC, AD, BC, BD and CD.

## Example of how our Flag calculator works

Let’s start by looking at the easiest example, one where all legs of the multiple win. The odds of each selection are as follows, 5.5, 4, 2.5 and 7. The amount staked will be £10, remember this bet is made up of 23 separate bets, meaning the total stake will be 10 x 23. Which is a total stake of £230.

First we will calculate the Yankee portion of the bet (which makes up 11 of the 23 bets), this is done by simply entering in the odds into the given formula.

((5.5 + 1)(4 + 1)(2.5 + 1)(7 + 1) – (5.5 + 4 + 2.5 + 7 + 1))*10

= (910 – 20) * 10

= 8900

And now for the long boring bit of calculating the 6 different SSA bets

AB leg

((Stake x selection 1) – Stake) + (Stake x selection 2) + ((Stake x Selection 2) – Stake) + (Stake x selection 1)

= ((10 x 5.5) – 10) + (10 x 4) + ((10 x 4) – 10) + (10 x 5.5)

= 45 + 40 + 30 + 55

= 170

Now you have recapped on how to work out SSA bets we will now just give you the pay-out for the remaining 5 bets in order to keep this example short.

Leg AC, AD, BC, BD and CD respectively.

140, 230, 110, 200 and 170

Giving a total for the 6 bets of 1020. Add this together with the Yankee portion of the bet and we get a grand total of £9920. Remember this is the total pay-out and for your total profit you must subtract the amount of money staked on this bet.
