NFL Betting Advice

Pretty much every sports gambling website you look at will offer some kind of NFL betting advice. As much as I hate to say this though, it’s typically not in your best interest and they’re usually just trying to sell you something, but hey, I guess they’re trying.

When looking for good, quality, and reputable NFL betting advice, the most important thing is to make sure it’s unbiased. It’s tough to find free and honest advice anywhere today and that’s especially true when it comes to sports betting.

Betting on the NFL is no easy task, so the more helpful advice, tips, and strategies you can learn, the better handicapper you will become. Now trust me, there’s no Holy Grail to betting on the NFL (and run away from anybody that promises you otherwise), but there certainly is some solid advice you should always follow.

My entire NFL betting philosophy is based on the following principles that I’ll share here in this essay. Now I’m not saying they’re right or wrong, but they’re definitely a great foundation for anyone seeking some honest and straight forward NFL betting advice. So without further ado, let’s take a look:

Money Management

The best NFL betting advice anyone could ever give you is to have a sound and strict money management system in place (this extends to all facets of sports betting as well, not just the NFL). I probably could have written a book by now on the significance of money management in betting on sports as many times as I’ve mentioned it on the site.

If you’ve read any of my other essays or articles then you know how I like to preach the importance of having a strict plan in place. Trust me, I know the pitfalls of poor money management and it’s not much fun. Now I have my own system that I use, but there are certainly other good ones out there. It really just comes down to religiously finding one that works and then sticking to it.

Money management is just one, and by far the most important, factor you can control when it comes to betting on the NFL. Most other factors are out of your hands and have to do with speculating on the outcome and finding perceived value in betting either Team A or Team B. So when you have the power and discipline to control how much you bet, you have to take advantage of it.

As simple as it sounds, if you follow a proven money management system, then you’re going to be ahead of 99% of other sports bettors. I know it sounds crazy, but it really is true. Having the discipline to not chase or up your bets when you’re on a losing streak is very difficult to do and that’s how so many people get in trouble when betting on sports.

It doesn’t matter if you’re the best NFL bettor in the world, you’re still going to have losing streaks (it’s just a fact). Now how you handle those losing streaks is what separates the successful handicappers from the squares. If you’re serious about betting on the NFL, then before you ever place a single bet, you must have a sound money management plan written down that you will always follow.

I know I sound like a broken record, but believe me, this is the best NFL betting advice you will every get. Winning money at betting on the NFL is a marathon, not a sprint. Be focused, be disciplined, and never veer from your money management plan.

Start Slowly

I highly recommend you simulate and track at least 100 bets before ever placing an actual real money wager on an NFL game (or any game for that matter). You should always keep track of every bet regardless of whether it’s for real money or not.

You have to “walk before you can run.” Track your bets and learn from them. Track why you made the bet. Find out if you’re always leaning with a particular trend or stat.

Get an idea if your strategy/philosophy is actually working before you ever place your hard earned cash on the line…and if it’s not, no big deal because no money was being wagered. Just make adjustments, keep tracking, and keep learning.

Not only is this good NFL betting advice, but tracking your picks prior to betting on any sport is an absolute must before putting real money on the line. I know you want to jump right in, but you have to take it slow when you’re first starting out.

Multiple Sportsbook Accounts

Although not quite as important as proper money management, having multiple sportsbook accounts is an absolutely critical piece of NFL betting advice. It may seem like a hassle at first, but I can guarantee you that it will save you thousands of dollars over time.

My recommendation is to have at least five funded sportsbook accounts. This allows you to find the best lines for the wager you’re wanting to place. When you have multiple accounts, you’re able to search for the absolute best line available and not just settle on what one sportsbook has to offer.

Like I said, this will literally save you thousands of dollars over time. If you’re able to gain a half point or even more (especially on a key number), then this could be the difference between a win and loss. I can almost guarantee you that having multiple accounts will increase your win percentage by at least 1-2 percentage points (that is absolutely huge over time).

There’s not a lot of things in your control when it comes to betting on the NFL, so when you have the ability to find the best number to bet, you better take advantage of it (I promise you that every professional handicapper does).

Not only can you save a half point, but there’s also a lot of sportsbooks that offer reduced juice at special times. Just remember, the lower the juice/commission you have to pay the sportsbook, the lower your win percentage can be while still breaking even. Again, it may not seem like much at first, but over time, the money you will save in reduced juice will add up to a very large number.

To be very honest with you, this NFL betting advice isn’t ground breaking by any means, but it’s the little things like proper money management and having multiple sportsbooks that separates the true professionals from the squares. If you just do those two simple things, I will guarantee you’ll be doing better than 99% of other people gambling on the NFL.

Study, Study, Study

In other words, watch as many NFL games as you possibly can (or at least highlights). More importantly though, try to learn something. This piece of NFL betting advice will serve you well in any kind of sports betting capacity.

Again, I know it sounds so simple, but it really comes down to more than just watching the games on TV. You really need to study them and preferably even be taking notes. I will promise you that every single professional handicapper does the exact same thing. As with anything, if you want to be successful, then you have to put in the time.

Let me give you a few examples of what I really try to pay attention to when studying or handicapping an NFL game:

  • Focus your attention on how the offensive and defensive lines perform. This is were everything starts, so it’s very important to know the strength of a teams offensive and defensive lines.
  • Follow injuries very closely. Most of the time you’ll know if the QB, RB, or a WR is out, but it’s equally important to know the injury status of the offensive line as well. Knowing who is banged up on the offensive line can save you from placing a losing bet.
  • When looking at an offense, I always prefer teams that have big time players that can make big time plays. I’m wanting touchdowns, not just field goals.
  • Look at how teams perform when they’re down. Do they give up or do they continue to push themselves to compete at all costs. A very disciplined team and coach is always a positive.
  • As boring as it sounds, pay attention to special teams. A great field goal kicker can be the difference between a win or a loss. The punter should also not be overlooked either. If a team has a punter that can consistently pin the other team deep in it’s own territory, then this is absolutely crucial to know.

These are just a few important factors to pay attention to when studying/handicapping football. Focus in on this piece of NFL betting advice and you’ll not only learn so much more about the game, but you’ll no doubt become a better handicapper.

Keep Precise Records

Another great piece of NFL betting advice is to keep track of absolutely every single bet you place. In other words write everything down…or more likely, keep it in some sort of database or Excel file. It may be a pain in the butt sometimes, but this is another factor that separates the successful NFL bettor from the square.

There are even some websites that provide a service for keeping track of all your wagers and even some forums offer this as well. That’s fine if you want to go that route, but I prefer inputting my data in a nice NFL tracking Excel file.

Overtime, you’ll begin to pick up on trends that could be helping or hurting you. You’ll also know your exact win/loss record, winning percentage, units won/lost, and so much more. By having precise records, you’ll know exactly where you stand at any point in time. Although keeping precise records might not be the most exciting NFL betting advice you’ll ever get, I can guarantee it will help you win more games in the long run.

Stay Focused

Stay focused? You might be asking yourself what the hell kind of NFL betting advice is that? Well of course your going to stay focused on watching the NFL (because of your love for the game), but what I’m talking about is staying focused on your NFL betting philosophy and goals.

Yes, believe it or not, I said goals. How in the heck are you going to know where you stand after the Super Bowl if you haven’t set any goals for yourself. Maybe it’s to have a certain win percentage, win so many units, win so much money…etc, whatever they might be, you need to write them down (keep precise records) and keep focus on them throughout the year.

Staying focused and having a clear mind of what you want to achieve during the NFL season is extremely important. This probably isn’t the normal NFL betting advice that you’ll see at some run of the mill betting website, but I can assure you Sports Betting Insights is so much more than that (shameless plug I know).

Continue to review your goals throughout the season to see where you stand and find out if there’s anything you need to change or refine in your strategy/philosophy. It is a proven fact that those handicappers that keep a precise focus on the goals they’ve set for themselves will be more successful than 99% of other handicappers. Take the extra time and I guarantee it will pay off.
