Once the regular season is finally over, there’s nothing better than NFL playoff betting. For most sports fans, the NFL playoffs are one of the top sporting events of the year. With that being the case, the “squares” come out of the woodwork to get in on the action…which is a good thing for the smart handicapper.
Because the NFL playoffs are so highly anticipated, more action will be taken on these games than any others during the regular season. As I said before, more action from the “squares” means more opportunities for the knowledgeable NFL bettor.
The farther the regular season goes along, the sharper the lines will become and that’s certainly the case for NFL playoff betting. With that being said though, the lines may open up sharp, however it doesn’t mean they’ll stay sharp throughout the week.
Since so much public money is being bet during the playoffs, sportsbooks have to adjust their numbers which in turn can create +EV betting situations for the seasoned NFL handicapper. As I’ve said many times before, you don’t want to be on the same side as public money.
Stay Away From The Public In NFL Playoff Betting
This is really true for all sports betting situations, but even more so when it comes to the NFL playoffs. Believe it or not, but your friends, talking heads on the radio, and the so called “NFL experts” on TV aren’t very good at picking games. If they were, well, they’d be retired somewhere in the Caribbean (all they want is hype and ratings).
You can listen to them, but you must do your own research. If anything, do the opposite of what they’re saying. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s the right thing to do…just ask anyone “in the know” or any professional handicapper and they’ll tell you the exact same thing. More times than not, you should fade the public and get on the same side as the sportsbook.
This will mean going against popular opinion, but it also means becoming a winning handicapper when it comes to NFL playoff betting. Just from listening to sports talk radio or ESPN, you can tell who the popular pick is, but if you’re wanting much more detailed information about who the public is betting on, my favorite site is Sports Insights.
Yes, the public will be right every once in a while, but it’s a proven fact that they’re wrong more often than they’re right. Put in your own research or follow a proven handicapper, but always know who the public money is coming in on.
Home Field Advantage (or Disadvantage)
Home field advantage is important to look at in NFL playoff betting…even more so than the regular season in my opinion. When I mention home field advantage though, it may not be what you’re thinking. Sometimes it can be very important for the home team while at other times to much is put into home field advantage creating +EV for the away underdog.
This is very important to look at and I know I may sound a little contradictory. This is when running your own numbers becomes so important to handicapping the playoffs. Home field advantage can create value for both the home or away team, it’s up to you to not get sucked into blindly betting on a home favorite before handicapping the game thoroughly.
Take A Hard Look At Underdogs
and Unders in NFL Playoff Betting
As I discussed before, we don’t want to be on the same side as the public. And what does the public like to bet on most? That’s right, the favorite and the over. People love betting on the “so called better team” and they also love seeing points scored in the playoffs.
Well, guess what? The linesmakers and sportsbooks know this and you can be damn sure that it’ll be compensated for in the line they set for the game. There can be great value in betting the underdog and the under in the NFL playoffs.
Do The Research
You have an entire seasons worth of stats to go back and study. Put in the time and just do it. So much hype and hoopla surround the playoffs, but the numbers will tell the true story.
Stats for the current season can be found just about anywhere. We have a few sports betting stats websites that we particularly like, but there are tons of them out there. Just put in a little hard work and I’ll guarantee it’ll payoff.
These NFL playoff betting tips definitely aren’t something you should just bet blindly into every time. These tips are designed to give you an edge or a starting point in trying to find +EV in a playoff game. Never follow any tip or strategy blindly…you always have to put in the time.
