What is Tamiflu?
Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is an effective anti-viral medication that can provide relief from the symptoms of the flu virus and even speed up your recovery time. Flu symptoms can develop quickly within the space of 5-10 hours, and it may take up to two weeks before the uncomfortable symptoms disappear. The active ingredient in this treatment (oseltamivir) helps to strengthen the immune system to fight against these symptoms. It is also possible to use this anti-viral treatment for flu prevention, if you have been in contact with someone infected with the influenza virus.
Tamiflu is currently the only licensed medication for the treatment of a flu outbreak and since its introduction in 1999, the treatment has successfully treated millions from different strains of the flu virus. In particular, its effectiveness was praised after the swine flu (H1N1) epidemic that occurred in 2009, with the World Health Organisation claiming that in over 14,000 flu samples that were tested, Tamiflu was effective in over 90% of the cases.
Clinical studies have shown that Tamiflu (oseltamivir) can reduce the duration of flu symptoms by at least 1-2 days. Other benefits include:
- Reduced risk of chest problems and complications such as pneumonia
- Good line of defence during pandemics such as swine/avian flu
- Can also be used as a preventative measure, to shield the body against the virus when in contact with infected people.
Who can use it?
Tamiflu can be used for the treatment and prevention of infections from the viral flu virus in adults and children aged 1 year and above. More recently, doctors prescribe this treatment more often, especially during winter periods where there is a greater risk of an outbreak.
Use of the treatment must be carefully considered by those who already have a weakened immuned system as the risk of side effects may be higher.
Who cannot use it?
Tamiflu anti-viral flu treatment is not suitable for use by:
- Pregnant women
- Those allergic to the active ingredient oseltamivir
- Those who are lactating or have kidney problems.
- Those undergoing renal failure treatment
It is essential that you state any medication you are currently using in the medical questionnaire, as this allows the doctor to understand whether there would be any negative interactions in which case you may have to cease using either treatment or use an alternative.

FAQs – Tamiflu
Does Tamiflu really work?
Tamiflu is not classified as a ‘miracle’ cure for the flu, but has been clinically proven to help reduce the time taken to recover from symptoms of a flu breakout. As each person is different, the treatment will interact at different levels depending on the individual. Therefore, it may been seen as very effective to some, and not so effective to others.
What happens if I miss a dose?
If you forget to take your Tamiflu 75mg tablet as required, then ensure you take it as soon as you remember unless it is too close to your next dose, in which case you can skip the forgotten dose and carry on as usual. Do not take a double dose under any circumstances unless permitted to by your doctor. If you have missed several doses, then inform your doctor for further advice.
Will Tamiflu prevent me from spreading the flu virus?
Although the treatment is effective and may lessen the incubation time of the flu virus, it will not stop you from being contagious. Ensure you follow proper hygiene procedures to prevent you from passing it on to others.
Do I still need a flu vaccination if I am using Tamiflu?
Yes, this treatment is only a management or preventative measure and does not replace the need for the flu vaccine. If you already do, continue to receive your annual flu shots.
